When this particular Kona N owner approached us with the idea of a manual conversion, we knew it would be a complex undertaking. No one had attempted this before, which meant we'd be engineering solutions from scratch.

The Build Process
Research & Planning
Extensive research into Hyundai's N-line architecture, transmission options from other models, and custom fabrication requirements. We analyzed the Elantra N manual transmission as a potential donor and mapped out compatibility challenges.
Sourcing Components
Sourced a complete manual transmission assembly from a donor Elantra N, including clutch, flywheel, shifter mechanism, and all associated hardware. We also acquired custom fabrication materials for brackets and mounts.
Mechanical Modifications
This phase involved removing the DCT transmission, modifying the transmission tunnel, custom fabricating mounting brackets, installing the clutch pedal assembly, and routing the hydraulic clutch lines. Every modification was carefully documented.
Electrical Integration
One of the most complex aspects was integrating the manual transmission with the vehicle's ECU and electronic systems. This required custom wiring harness modifications and extensive reprogramming to ensure all systems communicated correctly.
ECU Tuning & Calibration
With the mechanical installation complete, we performed comprehensive ECU tuning to optimize performance with the manual transmission. This included adjusting fuel maps, ignition timing, and ensuring proper integration with the N mode driving systems.
